Heavy storms in Peru caused substantial flooding on Thursday, with the northern region of the Andean country particularly hard-hit. In some areas, just three or four hours of significant rainfall left streets impassable and sent water pouring into houses and shops. Flood waters as deep as two meters were reported in areas of Arequipa, 763 km south of Lima. Peru is in the midst of its rainy season which extends through April.
