High-level talks of the World Trade Organization in Cameroon ended earlier than scheduled without major agreements, as divisions among members prevented consensus on key issues. Negotiations failed to extend the long-standing moratorium on customs duties for e-commerce, a measure that has been in place for years. Disagreements among participating countries also hindered progress on broader trade reforms and digital trade rules.
NgoziOkonjo-Iweala, WTO Director-General said "We worked hard and we worked differently these past four days in Cameroon and we achieved many important things and I hope that, as we have been discussing here, we can follow through on many of them when we get back to Geneva."
She also expressed hope that the organization could adopt a more flexible and responsive approach in the future, aiming to become more nimble and responsive moving forward.
