World Post Day: Myanmar celebrates 148th anniversary

Myanmar held a ceremony to mark the 148th anniversary of World Post Day on Wednesday.

In the ceremony at the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Union Minister Admiral Tin Aung San stressed the occasion of the 148th anniversary of the Universal Postal Union (UPU), which comprises 192 member countries and is the only world postal network with over 600,000 post offices around the world, and digital technology and ICT development have positive effects on postal services of the world.

He also highlighted the increasing incomes in postal services for applying Value Added Services after transforming into Postal Modernization from Traditional Post with the help of ICT and digital technology.

The theme of UPU is Post for Planet emphasizing natural environmental conservation. It can also reduce carbon emission and fuel usage as Myanmar Post Office under the ministry use E-bikes in postal services.

The Myanmar Post changes its services with Postal Modernization and publishes special stamps marking significant days and occasions, the Union Minister added.

Also, the director-general of the Post and Telecommunications Department explained objective of this ceremony and the director of the department read out the message sent by the director-general of Switzerland-based UPU and played the video clip marking the World Post Day.

This ceremony also included presenting awards to the winners of the 51st International Letter Writing Competition of (local) youth under 15. Myanmar started to mark the World Post Day in 1986.
