The world is not on track to end AIDS by 2030, said Winnie Byanyima, executive director of UNAIDS, speaking at a press conference at the start of the 25th International AIDS Conference in Munich.
Byanyima's assessment comes despite some progress being made, with "77 percent" of people living with HIV now on treatment, compared with just "47 percent" in 2015.Political decisions taken this year will determine whether a target to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030 can be reached, the United Nations said Monday.
Figures from 2023 show a drop in new infections and fatalities and improvement in access to treatment for HIV-positive patient. But while those figures look positive, the UNAIDS agency warned that the progress remained fragile.
