World No-Tobacco Day commemorative ceremony took place at the Ministry of Health in Nay Pyi Taw on Friday. Union Minister Professor Dr Thet Khaing Win gave an opening speech, highlighting Myanmar’s efforts in tobacco control measures in line with the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control.

Myanmar ratified the convention in 2003, and in line with its stipulations, the Control of Smoking and Consumption of Tobacco Product Law was enacted in 2006. According to this law, it is prohibited the selling or giving cigar to a person who has not attained the age of eighteen and selling cigar within the compound and within 100 feet from the compound of a school.

Moreover, advertisements and sale promotion of cigar and tobacco products are strictly prohibited by legal punishments. The Union Minister called for cooperation of all concerned persons for tobacco control measures. This year’s World No-Tobacco Day was organized with the theme “Protecting Children From Tobacco Industry Interference”.
