World Mental Health Day: Discussion On “Mental Health Promotion And Suicide Prevention”

A panel discussion in commemoration of World Mental Health Day was held in Yangon on Thursday.

World Mental Health Day has been observed in Myanmar since 2008, and this is the 11th time of celebration.

Myanmar Mental Health Society organized the panel discussion under the title “Mental Health Promotion and Suicide Prevention”.

Chairman, Myanmar Mental Health Society, Dr. Tin Oo said “As suicide prevention is the main concept for this year's World Mental Health Day, we discuss the causes of suicide, the risk factors and warning signs, and the most common people for suicidal cases. Especially, the expert panelists will discuss to figure out how we can help more to people who have suicidal thoughts and how do we reduce the suicidal cases.”

The Mental Health Society in Myanmar is also trying to educate the public, media and social influencers as well as mental health gatekeepers.

Four panelists including the Psychiatrist and social influencers took part in the discussion.

Panelist, Founder of Book Land Myanmar, Dr. May Moe Nwe said “We have psychologists and counsellors for mental health service in both government and non-government organizations. The public needs to aware that mental health is not a stigma and we want to educate them for coming out to get the health care like other sickness.”

According to WHO, over 800 000 people die due to suicide every year and suicide is the second leading cause of death in 15-29-year-olds.
