Magway Region’s Department of Consumer Affairs held a ceremony to mark the World Consumer Rights Day 2023 on Wednesday. During the ceremony at the Town Hall in Magway Township, Chief Minister U Tint Lwin highlighted efforts of the Department of Consumer Affairs including consumer rights protection, research, awareness giving and complaint solving. As a member of the ASEAN Committee on Consumer Protection, Myanmar has been implementing the ASEAN Consumer Strategic plans together with member states.

In Myanmar, the Consumer Empowerment Index was collected in May 2022. According to the Index, there is a need to continue to carry out consumer protection activities more efficiently and comprehensively in Magway Region, the Chief Minister added. The theme of World Consumer Rights Day 2023 is "Empowering Consumers through Clean Energy Transitions."

The theme this year aims to raise awareness of consumer empowerment and push their role for a faster clean energy transition. World Consumer Rights Day is marked on the 15th of March every year, as a means of raising global awareness about consumer rights and needs. Celebrating the day is a chance to demand that the rights of all consumers are respected and protected, and to protest against market abuses and social injustices which undermine those rights. World Consumer Rights Day is globally recognized and accredited by the United Nations.
