The ceremony to commemorate the 36th Anniversary of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (World Children's Day) was held at the assembly Hall of the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement.
In his opening address, the Union Minister for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Dr. Soe Win stated that the 44th United Nations General Assembly, held on 20th November 1989, adopted and enacted the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child to ensure protection and to identify and promote rights for children all over the world.
The Union Minister mentioned that the UN also designated November 20 as World Children's Day, which has now been observed annually for 36 years. He noted that the theme for this year's World Children's Day, as set by the UN, is "Listen to Children: my day, my rights" / "Promoting Daily Rights, Listening to Children's Voices".
He urged that in activities carried out for children, it is necessary to incorporate and consider children's ideas, wishes, and needs. He also called for collaboration from all relevant sectors to work towards ensuring that every child can fully enjoy their rights in a beautiful daily life and a promising future, enabling them to reach adulthood peacefully and happily.
Following this, a documentary video on the implementation of child rights was shown. Afterwards, children performed illustrative dances. The Union Minister then presented commemorative gifts and cash awards, after which the ceremony was concluded, it’s reported.
