Working Committee meeting: Myanmar SEZ Central Working Committee held meeting

Myanmar Special Economic Zone Central Working Committee held its 3rd meeting for the 2024-2025 fiscal year at the Ministry of Commerce in Nay Pyi Taw on Tuesday. Committee’s Chairman Union Minister for Investment and Foreign Economic Relations Dr. Kan Zaw and Vice Chairman Union Minister for Commerce U Tun Ohn attended the meeting and delivered speeches, respectively.

In his speech, the Committee’s Chairman emphasized the importance of continued coordination between the Kyauk Phyu SEZ Consortium and the CITIC Consortium for the success of the Kyauk Phyu Deep Sea Port Project. He noted the potential of the Dawei SEZ to become a key hub in Southeast Asia and stressed the need for swift action to attract both domestic and foreign investments.

He called for adherence to the Myanmar Special Economic Zone Law and Rules in treating investors. Then, the Vice Chairman reported on investment growth in Thilawa SEZ, foreign trade and MSME linkages to boost exports. He emphasized the need for cooperation with relevant ministries.

Regarding the Kyauk Phyu SEZ Deep Sea Port Project, he outlined the collaboration between the Myanmar GDE and China CITIC experts, as well as the establishment of Myanmar experts to support the project’s successful implementation.

The Vice Chairman also mentioned ongoing efforts to terminate the 8 Concession Agreements with 6 companies involved in the Dawei SEZ, allowing new investors to proceed and security matters for frequent unusual events in the zone.

This was followed by reports on the implementation of decisions from the second meeting and progress on work undertakings in the zones. The Committee’s Secretary then presented the draft resolution for the third meeting, which was approved. Next, the Chairman Dr. Kan Zaw made a summary of the presentations and coordinated the necessary measures.
