Women's cricket, a traditional weekend sport in French New Caledonia

Cricket in New Caledonia remains a cultural tradition within the Kanak community, played in traditional attire on local grounds. The sport, introduced by missionaries, is distinct from international cricket, with a shorter bat and local rules. 

Female cricketers in Noumea recently competed in this version of the game, which is primarily practiced by Kanak men and women. Efforts to revive the sport in the southern region aim to engage young people and promote cultural integration. 

The game was viewed as a way to connect generations and preserve tradition. While the sport is mainly Kanak, it remains open to all, with a European player having participated in recent years. Cricket serves as both a recreational activity and a means of cultural expression in New Caledonia.
