Winter Onion season: The onion farmers fetch better price in average

The farmers are out harvesting the Winter Onions in the surrounding areas of Kyat Mauk Taung creek and Kyat Mauk Taung Dam in Kyaukpadaung Township of Mandalay Region. The farmers fetch 1,200 kyats per viss in this harvesting time. The previous year, they just earned 500 kyats per viss.

So, the onion prices have hiked to over 700 Kyats per viss last year, according to the onion farmers. The first winter onions can be harvested about five months after planting.The production cost of one acre of onion is around K2 million, an onion grower said. 

Winter onions can keep the all year because of the long-term storage.  A farmer who lives in Mongone village said that he can get higher price due to good quality onions and good yield per acre during August, September and October, it’s learnt.
