The WHO's director-general on Wednesday called on nations to act to contain the spread of the omicron variant of COVID-19. Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General said "The omicron variant has now been reported in 57 countries, and we expect that number to continue growing. Certain features of omicron, including its global spread and large number of mutations, suggest it could have a major impact on the course of the pandemic. Exactly what that impact will be is still difficult to know.

Currently the extra-contagious delta variant  is responsible for most of the COVID-19 cases in the U.S. and other countries.
