


The Regional Level Kayin traditional Wagaung white thread tying festival was held at No.1 Basic Education High School in Myeik of Taninthayi Region on Thursday.
First, the festival was opened by singing Kayin national song and playing Mingalar Frog drum and Tagun Taing dance troupe performed Kayin traditional dance.
At the event, Union Minister for Ethnic Affairs U Saw Tun Aung Myint said that the white thread tying festival of Kayin people is held annually from the 1st waxing day of Wagaung to the full moon day.
Kayin people hold the white thread tying festival with the aim to have unity among families, old and young people, reunite, promoting friendship, and preserving traditional culture. Moreover, the festival is that those whose wrists are tied with white thread bracelets will be protected from devils and bad fortune and will have success for the whole year. He called on Kayin national people to work togethter for the perpetuation of the Union, development and peace and stability with unity and amity.
Later, Taninthayi Region Chief Minister U Myat Ko explained about the emergence of the Kayin white thread tying festival and preserving traditional culture. The dance troupe of Catholic Christian Parahita Gayhar in Myeik entertained with Kayin done dance.
The Chairman of Kayin Literature and Culture Committee in Myeik Township read out the paper on the emergence of the festival and the Taninthayi Region Minister for Ethnic Affairs spoke word of thanks. The Kayin elders tied the white thread to the guests who attended the ceremony.
