Kayin ethnic people annually hold the traditional white thread tying festival in the month of Wagaung.
The white thread tying festival was held in Kayin student guesthouse in Hpa-an on Sunday. The white thread symbolizes remembrance for one’s parents and ancestors and is also a momentous occasion for Kayin people to reunite.
The celebration started with a speech of the Chair and then Kayin young ethnic people explained about the emergence of the festival in Poe, Sakaw and Myanmar languages. Then, Kayin youths and people brought in the festival accessories and invited the Kayin elders who made kind wishes to celebrate the festival.
The main purpose of the festival is that those whose wrists are tied with white thread bracelets will be protected from devils and bad fortune and will have success for the whole year.
