Hunger in Haiti could rise amid increasing inflation, high costs of food and fuel, and soaring violence, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has warned.

Some 1.3 million people are facing emergency food insecurity. Exacerbating the situation is the COVID-19 pandemic, natural disasters, soaring food and energy prices that climbed in the weeks following Russia-Ukraine crisis, and gang violence in Haiti. In May alone, more than 200 killings and 198 abductions were reported in the country of more than 11 million people, which has only 12,800 active police officers. Meanwhile groups such as the World Food Program have been providing assistance to those most in need.
