Volunteers poured onto the beaches of Lima's Green Coast on Friday to participate in a cleanup campaign to counter pollution on the coast of the Peruvian capital. The area encompasses several Lima neighbourhoods whose beaches are regularly visited by bathers and surfers.

Friday's work involved some arduous tasks, such as looking for microplastics remaining beneath the rocky beaches of the Green Coast. The group participates in the Chaya Chaya Peru, a government campaign to join volunteers and private and public forces to take care of Lima's natural resources.

It also raises awareness of climate change. Besides the cleanup, 750 trees were planted along the Green Coast area on Friday. According to the Environment Ministry, Peru generates around 23,000 tons of solid waste per day, which is equivalent to three of Peru's National Stadiums full of garbage.
