International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in collaboration with the Prisons Department inaugurated a Vocational Training Center at Mandalay Central Prison on Saturday.

Launched in 2018, the training centre will provide detainees with the opportunity to gain vocational skills that will help prepare them for life after release.

The new vocational training centre opened on 18 January consists of a two-storey building with four fully-equipped workshops on the ground floor and classrooms on the first floor. Detainees will have the opportunity to gain technical skills in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, hairdressing and carpentry. Programmes aim to provide recognized technical certification to 300-400 young detainees per year and will be run in cooperation with various agencies and organizations, including the Myanmar Business Executives Association (MBEA).

The MBEA will offer entrepreneurship training in order to support detainees’ successful reintegration into society upon release.
