Vikings are widely recognized as fierce warriors and explorers, but their sorceresses, known as "volvas," played a crucial role in Norse society and are now highlighted in a Danish exhibit.
Peter Pentz, researcher, National museum of Denmark, said "I suspect very few people really know what is a volva. And in short, it's a kind of female shaman, it's a seeress, a spywoman. She can look into the future. She can fly, yeah, she can fly. And she can foretell your fortune."
According to Viking sagas, which are based on oral accounts written several hundred years after the 9th-11th century Viking era, volvas were summoned to predict the future and could communicate with the gods. This exhibit at the National Museum of Denmark sheds light on these enigmatic figures and their influence in Norse mythology and society.
