Venezuelan devotees of St. John the Baptist celebrated the declaration of their religious festival as an "intangible cultural heritage of humanity" by the U.N. cultural agency on Wednesday.

Faith groups from across the country came together in the capital Caracas to celebrate the recognition of their joyful drum processions, songs and dances. The celebration of St. John the Baptist is a blend of the Catholic beliefs of Spanish conquerors and African slave rites brought to Venezuela during the colonial period.
