US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said on Tuesday that he agreed with his South Korean counterpart to remain "clear-eyed about the threats they face during the Security Consultative meeting. He stated that "For the first time in history, they agreed to demonstrate the ability to maintain and repair US warships in Korea and doing that would harness that country's world class shipbuilding capabilities."

He stressed Korea has an incredible shipbuilding industry, which they look forward to partnering with a lot more, whether it's surface warfare submarines. He added there's going to be a great deal to be made and he think it'll be mutually beneficial to both countries."
