Days after the U.S. authorized its first update to COVID-19 vaccines, booster doses that target today's most common omicron strain are being rolled out across the country. The move by the Food and Drug Administration tweaks the recipe of shots made by Pfizer and rival Moderna that already saved millions of lives.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, Director, National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases said "My message to you is simple: Get your updated COVID 19 shot as soon as you are eligible in order to protect yourself, your family, and your community against COVID 19 this fall and winter."

The new U.S. boosters are combination, or "bivalent," shots. The combination aims to increase cross-protection against multiple variants. They contain half that original vaccine recipe and half protection against the newest omicron versions, BA.4 and BA.5.
