US FDA approves drug for autism treatment

The US pharmaceutical regulator approved the drug leucovorin for the treatment of autism Monday. "The FDA, based on NIH research, is approving prescription of Leucovorin for treatment of autistic children," said Mehmet Oz, administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

The Food and Drug Administration said in the US Federal Register that it had approved leucovorin, a concentrated form of folic acid. Folic Acid is commonly given to expectant mothers for the healthy development of babies.
