Washington was speaking with one voice on Thursday as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations affirmed the U.S. view that Iran was behind the tanker attack in the Middle East. Two oil tankers were attacked on Thursday and left adrift in the Gulf of Oman, driving up oil prices and stoking fears of a new confrontation between Iran and the United States, which blamed Tehran for the incident.

ACTING U.S. AMBASSADOR TO UN, JONATHAN COHEN said "It's unacceptable for any party to attack commercial shipping. And as Secretary Pompeo said in his press briefing this afternoon in Washington, the United States assesses that Iran is responsible for these attacks..." Tensions between Iran and the United States, along with its allies including Saudi Arabia, have risen since U.S. President Donald Trump pulled out of a deal last year between Iran and global powers that aimed to curb Tehran's nuclear ambitions.
