At Brussels in Belgium, European leaders reached an agreement on Thursday to grant Ursula von der Leyen a second term as President of the European Commission, as part of a distribution of key EU positions.

The German conservative leader still needs to be confirmed in a vote by the European Parliament, as does the Estonian liberal Prime Minister, Kaja Kallas, who has been proposed as the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs. Additionally, the EU heads of state and government have appointed the Portuguese socialist Antonio Costa as President of the European Council.
