Unusual spring snowfall blankets village in French Alps

Residents of a village in southern France are skiing along snow-covered roads and digging their cars out after an exceptional April snowfall blanketed the French Alps — including the Val-Cenis ski resort — with 90 cm of fresh snow. 

Several ski resorts in the Alps have been closed due to the heightened risk of avalanches. The Val Thorens area in Savoie has partially reopened to skiers following abundant spring snowfalls that caused significant disruption in the Alps. Off-piste skiing remains strongly discouraged, as the department is once again under an orange avalanche alert.
