Universal Periodic Review: MoLA UM UAG held meeting with MNHRC Chairman

Union Minister and Union Attorney General Dr. Thida Oo held meeting with Chairman of Myanmar National Human Rights Commission, U Paw Lwin Sein, on July 8, at the meeting hall of the Ministry of Legal Affairs in Nay Pyi Taw.

During the meeting, both sides held an open and cordial discussion, exchanging views on matters related to the third cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR), a process that involves the regular review of the human rights situations of all UN member states particularly regarding Myanmar’s report submission and clarification points raised by the Commission.

In the discussion, the Ministry of Legal Affairs stated that it had drafted and submitted Myanmar’s third cycle UPR report to the UPR Working Group. It was explained that the review of Myanmar’s human rights situation for the third cycle took place during the 37th session of the UPR Working Group on January 25, 2021.

On that day, 106 UN member states made a total of 354 recommendations concerning Myanmar’s human rights situation. Regarding these, 119 recommendations were accepted (enjoy the support), 46 recommendations were noted, and 189 recommendations were placed under review and will be examined and a response would be provided later. Myanmar communicated this position to the UPR Working Group on January 26, 2021.

Furthermore, the preliminary report of the UPR Working Group concerning Myanmar’s review was adopted on January 29, 2021, and has been uploaded to the UPR website, it’s learnt.
