A ceremony to mark the 73rd Anniversary of Union Day was held in Panglong of Shan State on Wednesday with an opening speech by State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

It’s a day of remembrance for those who signed the Panglong in 1947, but also a hopeful reminder for those participating and following the 21st Century Panglong. The ceremony started with a salute of the national flag and remembrances for the fallen national heroes.

State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi gave a speech. Independence was achieved after Bogyoke Aung San and ethnic national leaders held the Panglong Conference on 12 February, 1947, and signed the Panglong Agreement in unity. The 12th February portraying the unity and solidarity of all ethnic nationals was designated as the Union day.

Today, in striving for the national reconciliation and peace, the Government has already signed the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA) with 10 ethnic armed organizations.

Through the political dialogues, the Union Peace Conference-21st Century Panglong has been successfully held for three times, gaining common agreements. The 51-point of agreements that are necessary for building a democratic federal union have been achieved as parts of the Union Accord.
