New agenda sets sail with bold action as UN Water Conference closes. The UN 2023 Water Conference closed on Friday in New York with the adoption of the Water Action Agenda, a milestone action plan containing almost 700 commitments to protect water. The conference forged an “ambitious vision,” the UN Secretary-General António Guterres said.

“From protecting against the spread of disease to fighting poverty, water flows through the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). That’s why “water needs to be at the center of the global political agenda,” he added.

Other follow-up steps are under consideration – including the appointment of a Special Envoy on Water to advance the prominence of water security in the lead-up to this September’s SDG Summit, as well as the Summit of the Future next year.
