At UN, tech chiefs urge caution in AI development

The heads of major artificial intelligence companies addressed an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in New York, warning that rapidly advancing technology demands heightened vigilance, international cooperation, and strict safety guardrails.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told the 15-member council that the industry "must not accept too much technological risk just because the benefits are too great and important to slow down". Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei took an even starker tone via video link, stating that if managed poorly, AI could pose "a risk to humanity as a whole".

Hugging Face CEO Clément Delangue also briefed the council, emphasizing the dual nature of AI in cybersecurity noting recent incidents where AI models were used both maliciously and defensively to fend off infrastructure attacks. Tech leaders and many international diplomats urged global oversight and shared safety frameworks.
