The Head of the UN's Mission in South Sudan Nicholas Haysom visited Bentiu to assess the recovery operation following flooding which has affected 70% of the country's Unity State.
It's estimated that up to 850,000 residents have been impacted by the weather event in the country's north. As he toured the region, Haysom said that it could take up to 15 years for the floodwaters to evaporate naturally. He stressed the need to find another way "connect to livelihoods and be able to return to their places of origin as dignified returnees."
The UN has said that about 8.3 million people in South Sudan in total are in need of humanitarian support as a result of conflict and weather events fuelled by climate change.
