UN chief, in Haiti, says 'not the time to forget' troubled nation

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in Haiti on Saturday and expressed solidarity with the Haitian people, who are going through a tragic cycle of security, political and humanitarian crises.

The UN chief called on the international community to make Haiti a priority and urged the Security Council, due to discuss the situation again in July, "to authorize the immediate deployment of a robust international security force".

Guterres is expected to meet with Prime Minister Ariel Henry as well as other political leaders and members of civil society. The United Nations and Henry have repeatedly made the case for a multinational force to stabilize Haiti, which has not held national elections since 2016.
