UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called on nations to "act now for a peaceful world" at an annual ceremony in New York on Friday to ring the Peace Bell. The Peace Bell was donated by Japanese peace activist Nakagawa Chiyoji in 1954.

The bell was cast from coins contributed by UN member states. In a speech, Guterres noted that conflicts are multiplying and civilians are suffering. He said peace does not happen by accident, but that it is "forged through courage, compromise, and above all, action." He rang the Peace Bell and prayed for peace.
