Britain's Queen Elizabeth II paid tribute on Sunday to Archbishop Desmond Tutu, who died earlier in the day, aged 90.

In a statement, she said the royal family were "deeply saddened" by the death of the Nobel Peace prize laureate. The Queen described Tutu as "a man who tirelessly championed human rights in South Africa and across the world".

She went on to state she would "remember with fondness" their meetings and the archbishop's "great warmth and humour".
