The Turkish, Syrian and Russian defence ministers have held previously unannounced talks in Moscow, the Turkish and Russian defence ministries said on Wednesday. It was the first ministerial level meeting between rivals Turkiye and Syria since the start of the Syrian conflict 11 years ago.

Turkish Defence Minister Hulusi Akar said the discussions focused on "what could be done for peace and calm to be established in Syria and how developments in the region could develop favourably." Russia has long been pressing for a reconciliation between Turkish and the Syrian governments.
