Demonstrations broke out in Gabes, southern Tunisia, as activists demanded the closure of a local chemical factory linked to dozens of poisoning cases. Protesters cited long-term environmental and health impacts from emissions at the phosphate processing plant, which has been operating for more than five decades.

Residents said they are seeking the cessation of harmful gas releases rather than financial compensation or employment from the facility. Authorities have yet to respond to calls for immediate action, and tensions remain high as the community presses for the factory’s closure.
