Trump orders federal agencies to stop using Anthropic AI

US President Donald Trump said he is ordering all federal agencies to stop using technology provided by AI startup Anthropic. This follows the company's failure to reach an agreement with the Defense Department over the use of its systems.

The company, which has been under contract with the Pentagon, has argued for restrictions on its AI systems to prevent their use for the mass surveillance of people, or fully autonomous weapons. But the Department of Defense has demanded the technology be made available for all purposes.

Anthropic said no amount of intimidation or punishment from the Defense Department will change its position on mass domestic surveillance or fully autonomous weapons. It also said the company will challenge any supply chain risk designation in court.
