Hundreds of fishmongers began leaving Tsukiji at the crack of dawn on Sunday heading for a gleaming new $5 billion market set to open on October 11 on reclaimed land farther from central Tokyo. Many complain of the lack of space, restrictions on the use of water and live fish tanks, and the clinical austerity of the new building.
Some fishmongers fear they may have to close shop after the move if their clients decide to buy products at other fish markets. The 83-year-old Tsukiji market had drawn tens of thousands of visitors a year with exotic species of fish and fresh sushi.
