Tokyo Tower, a popular and symbolic landmark of Japan’s capital, has welcomed 190 million visitors since opening 66 years ago. A ceremony was held on Wednesday to mark the occasion.
The tower is located in Minato Ward and stands 333 meters tall. It was opened in 1958 as a radio tower. The milestone visitors were Toby and Lauren Tong, a couple from the US city of Seattle. They were among the many tourists who were visiting the tower on Wednesday from around Japan and overseas.
The couple broke open a ceremonial ball with the tower’s official characters, the Nippon Brothers, and were presented with a bouquet and a commemorative gift. The President of Tokyo Tower’s Operator said he is pleased that this day has arrived, added that Tokyo Tower will continue to be here along with the changing Metropolis and its visitors.
