Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) said it has shut down a reactor at its Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant because of a malfunction.

The facility is located in the central prefecture of Niigata. TEPCO said there are no safety issues, and this will not impact the surrounding areas. It had just resumed operation on Wednesday. Staff suspended extraction of control rods in the No. 6 reactor in the early hours of Thursday when an alarm sounded.

The alarm was related to the operation and monitoring of the control rods. By the time it sounded, 52 out of 205 rods had been extracted. Staff suspected a problem with electrical systems and replaced some components, but it did not improve.
