The ceremony of promoting the awareness of the control of smoking and consumption of tobacco products was held in Nay Pyi Taw on Friday.

Union Minister for Health and Sports Dr Myint Htwe delivered the opening speech at the event which was also attended by the committee members, representatives and students.

The notification by Nay Pyi Taw Development Committee was also issued during the ceremony. It includes the prohibition of smoking in most outdoor places, indoor workplaces and on public transportation.

The health official expressed the needs to promote public awareness on the issue.

Director, Non-Communication Disease Control Unit (MoHS), Dr Kyaw Kan Kaung said "We have to monitor the tobacco consumption in Myanmar and the development of the control of smoking and consumption of tobacco product law. We also need to promote awareness of the health effects of smoking."

The notification also includes the implementation of the private smoking area, rotating health warnings comprised of texts and images and prohibition of tobacco advertising and promotion. These notifications will be practised in 8 townships of Nay Pyi Taw Council Area.

Director, Non-Communication Disease Control Unit (MoHS), Dr Kyaw Kan Kaung said "Secondhand smoke causes numerous health problems in infants and children, including cancer, heart disease, lung diseases, diabetes and many more. So, smoking will be prohibited in most public places but I think-private smoking rooms will be needed to build for some smokers."

Myanmar signed the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) Protocol to Eliminate Illicit Trade in Tobacco Products in 2003. The Control of Smoking and Consumption of Tobacco Product Law was enacted in 2006.
