The Metals Company (TMC), a Canadian deep-sea mining firm, is seeking a fast-tracked U.S. permit to begin commercial extraction of polymetallic nodules from the Clarion-Clipperton Zone in the Pacific Ocean. CEO Gerard Barron said the company is ready to start operations.
Gerard Barron, CEO, The Metals Company said "What I can tell you is that we have our first production vessel. We've proven how we're going to turn the nodules into intermediate products at scale. We're hoping for a fast-tracked permit, with the help of the executive order signed by President Trump in April, and we're ready to go."
TMC plans to harvest nodules containing nickel, cobalt, copper, and manganese for batteries and green infrastructure. It has completed development of its first production vessel and demonstrated processing at scale.
