TikTok app blocked in New Caledonia amid riots

France government has banned the social media app TikTok in its Pacific territory of New Caledonia, as part of efforts to quell days of violent unrest.

French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal announced on Wednesday that the high commissioner for the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia had "banned TikTok" across the entire archipelago, in addition to a series of measures aimed at restoring order, including deploying military personnel to protect strategic sites.

The government believes the app was being used by those opposed to French rule to communicate and organize violent protests.
