Thousands at rally for Brazil's Lula da Silva

Tens of thousands of supporters turned out Saturday in Sao Paulo to cheer presidential candidate Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for his bid to return to leading the country.

Supporters chanted when he took the stage in the first public event of his campaign to try and unseat incumbent Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro.

Lula assured the crowd that there will be a peaceful transfer of power after the October 2 elections, dismissing threats by Bolsonaro that he would not accept the results of the elections if he loses the vote.

In the latest poll released by Datafolha, a respected national surveying firm, 47% say they intend to vote for Lula, against 32% for Bolsonaro, a 15% gap.
