Thousands flee floods in central Somalia

The Shabelle River has burst its banks in Beledweyne, in central Somalia, forcing thousands of people to abandon their homes, according to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), and submerging markets and hospitals.

A full 60.9 million new internal displacements were reported in 2022 according to a joint report by the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) and the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC).
