Close to one million people took to the streets of Cologne, Germany on Sunday (July 8), the organisers of the annual Christopher Street Day gay and lesbian pride parade say. Christopher Street Day commemorates the riots that broke out in New York in 1969 after police raided a gay bar. It becomes an event seen as a turning point for the gay rights movement. It has been celebrated in what was then West Germany since 1979.
