Thailand plans to introduce a tax on salty snacks in 2025, as part of a broader effort to reduce sodium consumption and improve public health, a senior official of the Excise Department said.

The tax would initially target snack foods, considered non-essential items.

The department also said the amount of salt will be consider in the product. If there is a lot of salt, a lot of tax will have to be pay, but if there is a small amount of salt, the tax will be reduced.

The department is still studying the details of the tax and will ensure a sufficient grace period for manufacturers to adjust their recipes.
