Thailand's parliament is preparing to vote to choose a new prime minister on Friday, one week after the country's premier was ousted by a court ruling. The leader of a conservative opposition party believes he has secured enough support to be elected. Anutin Charnvirakul heads the Bhumjaithai Party which used to be the second largest party in the ruling coalition.

The biggest opposition pro-democracy People's Party has said it will back Anutin. But that's on condition parliament is dissolved within four months and the new government commits to constitutional reform. The Pheu Thai Party is urging lawmakers to vote for its candidate, Chaikasem Nitisiri. If he is elected, it says it will immediately dissolve parliament and not wait for the four-month deadline.
