Taekwondo Competition: 3-Day Event Kicked Off In Nay Pyi Taw

The Opening Ceremony of 2019 Region/State Taekwondo Competition took place on Monday in Nay Pyi Taw.

Vice Chairperson of Myanmar Olympics Committee, Deputy Minister for Health and Sports Dr. Mya Lay Sein gave the opening remarks.

Under the leadership of the Ministry of Health and Sports, Myanmar Taekwondo Federation organized the competition aiming to raise the patriotic spirit and to gain the friendship among the players from Regions and States, to nurture talented new generation athletes who could represent the country in the international Taekwondo competitions.

The Federation plans to select more outstanding athletes through this competition for upcoming 30th SEA Games in Philippines

Joint Secretary, Myanmar Taekwondo Federation, Mya Thein said “Taekwondo Competition is one of the annual Region/State competitions by MOHS Sport Calendar. We are organizing 5 competitions at least a year like Chairmanship Cup, Korea Ambassador’s Cup, Freelance and so on. From there, we are recruiting the outstanding new generation players for the country.”

Myanmar Taekwondo players have won 14 gold, 10 silver and 39 bronze medals from 18th SEA Games in 1997 to 29th SEA Games in 2017.

Another 3 silver and 9 bronze medals were also fetched at 14th Asian Taekwondo Championship, held in the Philippines in May this year.

The Federation has been recruiting the outstanding young athletes by organizing the competitions and opening summer classes annually.

Coach, Kyaw Tun said “This year has more improvement than the previous year. We are giving training to the players so hard to get more gold medals. And I think, this competition is really effective for the motivation of young athletes. At the same time, they are coming more interest significantly in Taekwondo as the martial art than usual.”

The competition is set to be held from 15th to 17th of July at Wunna Theikdhi Stadium (B) in Nay Pyi Taw.
