The pagodas and temples in the Bagan Archaeological Zone in Nyaung U District Mandalay region were inundated and some areas are flooded due to the very severe cyclonic storm “MOCHA”.

Therefore, plans are underway to renovate the 8 damaged pagodas and buildings to restore the ancient structures and to upgrade drainage and hydraulic system to prevent flooding and overflow of water in the compounds of Pagodas and temples in Bagan.

Nyi Mhoon, Dy Director, Dept. of Archaeology and national Museum,  Bagan said "We could make preparedness measures in time before the cyclone. Some areas of Dahamanyangyi pagoda were flood during the storm and we could solve it as soon as possible. Previously, we made survey on water channels of Bagan era with the collaboration of respective organizations and foreign experts and have planned to install water tank and spillways through water channels. In 2022-2023 Financial Year, we made preparedness measures to prevent water inundation near Bagan Tower and Ywar Haung Gyi pagoda."

For the prevention of flooding, surveys will be conducted to upgrade the drainage and hydraulic system in a priority and the renovation of the damaged pagodas will be continued to carry out.
