Currently, Myanmar exports sugar only to Vietnam and other foreign countries have been planning to buy, according to the Myanmar Sugar and Sugarcane Related Products Association [MSSRPA]. There are around 450,000 acres of sugarcane plantation in Myanmar this year.

Win Htay, Vice-Chairman, MSSRPA said "At present, Myanmar has been exporting sugar only to Vietnam, and Chinese companies contacted us to buy from us, but there is no plan to sell to them currently because our first priority is to ensure self-sufficiency in the country. Due to the good weather conditions this year, we hope that the sugarcane cultivation will be better than the last year and the production of sugar will increase."

The sugarcane is usually grown in December and January and it can be harvested between November and February. And, it is commonly cultivated in the upper Sagaing Region, northern Shan State, western and eastern Bago Region, Yangon and Mandalay Region.
